Former Arsenal and Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole is hoping to extend his contract with Los Angeles Galaxy rather than making a switch to his homeland in the New Year.

The veteran has a contract with the Galaxy until December, but there are suggestions that the club are planning for wholesale changes following one of their worst campaigns in Major League Soccer.

Speaking to The Independent, Cole said: “I want to be here. We’re speaking. It’s in their court with me. There’s going to be a big change with the club and I think maybe it will happen next season. If I’m in those plans, we’ll find out. Who knows? I’m 37 so maybe they want to look a little younger. I’m just disappointed we’re losing, but I want to keep going until my legs actually give out. Thankfully they haven’t given up just yet. I only want to stop when my heart for it finishes.”

The Galaxy reached a new low in their history this term after they accumulated just 32 points from their 34 matches. As a result, they finished last in the Western Conference, while failing to reach the Major League Soccer playoffs for the right time since 2008.

Cole joined the California-based club from AS Roma back in January 2016 and he has since amassed over 50 appearances in all competitions. The former England international will be celebrating his 37th birthday in December, and the Galaxy are likely to weigh up all possible options before the new season.

The left-sided defender was linked with a potential switch to Birmingham City during the summer, but unfortunately, a deal could not quite materialise with Cole having been determined to stay put in Los Angeles where he has pretty much settled with his family. Cole stands the chance of earning a significant wage with a second-tier English, but he appears satisfied to extend his Galaxy salary on an average package of just $4,000-a-week.

Former Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne has insisted that he has no regrets over his decision to leave Chelsea as he did not want to rot in the reserves with other young players.

The centre-back managed just four appearances during his five-year spell at Stamford Bridge before he moved on to Hamburg in 2011. The former England youth international has since made his way to Nottingham Forest, where he has established himself as a regular.

Speaking about his experience at Chelsea, Mancienne insisted that he was in a comfort zone in west London, and this urged him to pursue a fresh challenge. The Englishman regards the likes of John Terry, Ashley Cole and Joe Cole as his role models, and believes he was at the right age to move on.

“I was in the comfort zone at Chelsea and it is easy for players to rot away in that environment. I was 21 when I made my debut and it was great moment. I thought it would be the time when I kicked on but there were too many players in front of me, many of them captains for their countries. The likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Joe Cole were the best role models to have, and seeing people like John break into the first team obviously gave you that hope and desire to do the same thing.”

Not many players have progressed from the Blues academy into the first-team, and Mancienne took examples of the likes of Ryan Bertrand, Jack Cork and Sam Hutchinson and Liam Bridcutt, who have all been successful in their careers elsewhere. The 29-year-old will come face to face with his former club for the first time on Wednesday night when Forest visit Stamford Bridge for the third round of the League Cup. Forest have made a decent start to their Championship season, and they are currently placed 10th in the standings with 12 points.
